Identifying & Tackling Hair Loss

Identifying if The Issue is Severe or Not

Most of us get startled when we look down at the drain and see a clump of hair stuck right in there while we shower. However, there is a difference between regular shedding and unusual hair loss. The symptoms are severe if you start noticing random bald spots on your scalp. You may be experiencing a condition called Alopecia Areata, which is actually an auto-immune response & causes are not completely known. It is actually known to be the second most common form of hair loss.

If it's excessive thinning, then you may be experiencing female or male pattern balding. If you're dealing with both issues simultaneously, then the worry is completely understandable. Speak to your primary care physician &/or dermatologist who will guide you towards the appropriate treatments.

Unfortunately, I experienced both those symptoms together. I have always been active, in optimal health & eat clean, so the outbreak didn't make any sense to me. After the discussion with my doctor I realized that it could have possibly been due to several high-stress factors all at once. I was moving homes, running a business & balancing life all at once. Sometimes we don't realize that it can take a tole in it's own way & the body shows signs in strange ways. It was time for change.

The following information is not intended to endorse drugs and recommend/prescribe therapy. It is just a review I am sharing about my experience they are not a substitute for the expertise, skill, knowledge and judgement of healthcare practitioners in patient care.

After a relieving visit to my Doctor & Dermatologist, I was comforted knowing that the bald spots are treatable. I was prescribed a steroid injection called Kenalog-10 with anti-inflammatory properties, administered by the doctor around the effected area between 4-6 week intervals. I had a total of 5 sessions, so it the entire treatment period lasted approximately 7 months . I noticed the regrowth slowly & steadily & within the year, the area was completely filled with brand new hair & returned to it's normal length. I was told by the doc that this does not work for all over thinning & pattern balding, as it is only to treat AA.

Each individual case may vary, but as I mentioned earlier I am only sharing my experience. Talk to your doctor to find out if this is an option for you, as well as if there are any side effects that come with it.

To help you better understand how you can identify the extremity of your situation, here are some interesting points I'd like to share which I learned in hair school & during my own personal outbreak:

  • Women lose more hair strands per day than men, and more so if using improper tools & styling methods for example, bad brush, old hair dryer that gives off heat and no power - (yes, I’ve actually seen people with ancient blow dryers that are a second away from a short circuit)

  • We have over 100k hair follicles in our scalp. About 100 strands of fall out per day is quite normal. More for those individuals who have higher hair density

  • Hair has approximately a 2-5 year life span

As I mentioned earlier, there are tell-tale signs that indicate irregular or unusual amounts for you. If you notice a larger than usual cluster of consecutive strands sliding off - perhaps in the shower, or you’re constantly leaving a trail behind anywhere you go - just save yourself the stress & talk to your doctor. Maybe you can possibly prevent the issue from getting worse.

There are several factors that contribute to this menace of a problem:

Stress & Hormonal Levels

Excessive Lighting & Colouring

Daily & Improper Heat Styling

Tying hair too tight

Lack of Oiling & Treatments

Pregnancy, Postpartum, Menopause

Scalp Buildup

Improper Diet & Lifestyle

& many many more

Try to monitor it & see if you notice a pattern.

I had two outbreaks over the course of 2 years, and noticed that they both occurred during early spring when it is allergy season. I also noticed that the past two spring seasons have been a trip to allergy-ville, even though I have never been to that town before. Something was changing & after spending a ton of time, money & effort researching, trying & testing products, I narrowed it down. I’m not guaranteeing that all these steps may work for you, but they did for myself & many of my friends so I'm sure there are more of you out there who need some guidance & a starting point.
